The Prospects for Asteroseismology from Ground-based Sites
We reexamine the possibility of detecting p-mode oscillations inSun-like stars with ground-based telescopes. Previous attempts to makesuch observations with photometric techniques have been limited tosubgiant stars in M67 and have illustrated the great difficultiesinvolved in performing ground-based asteroseismology. Substantial gainsin observing efficiency can be realized from new diagnostic techniquesand improvements in instrumentation, especially with newer CCD camerasystems. We show that for appropriately selected field stars observedwith a network of telescopes or at a high duty cycle site, it will bepossible to detect p-mode oscillations from the ground. An alternativeto a network of telescopes for asteroseismology would be to develop adedicated observatory for this purpose at a high duty cycle site, i.e.,the South Pole. We estimate the scintillation, the main noise source inasteroseismology, at the pole by modeling the index of refractionstructure parameter from meterological data. The model results show thatat the Pole the variance of the relative intensity fluctuations--i.e.,the scintillation--should be a factor of 5 smaller than at at Mauna Kea.Taking into account the improvements possible with target selection andinstrumentation, the South Pole would be an excellent site forasteroseismological work on Sun-like stars. Walraven photometry of nearby southern OB associations
Homogeneous Walraven (VBLUW) photometry is presented for 5260 stars inthe regions of five nearby southern OB associations: Scorpio Centaurus(Sco OB2), Orion OB1, Canis Major OB1, Monoceros OB1, and Scutum OB2.Derived V and (B - V) in the Johnson system are included.
