Magnetic fields of chemically peculiar stars. II: Magnetic fields and rotation of stars with strong and weak anomalies in the continuum energy distribution
We make a comparative analysis of magnetic fields and rotationparameters of magnetic CP stars with strong and weak anomalies in thespectral energy distribution. Stars with strong depressions in thecontinuum at 5200 Å are shown to have significantly strongerfields (the mean longitudinal component of the fields of these stars is< B e> = 1341 ± 98 G) compared to objects withweaker depressions (< B e> = 645 ± 58 G). Starswith stronger depressions are also found to occur more commonly amongslow rotators. Their rotation periods are, on the average, about 10 dayslong, three times longer than these of stars with weak depressions(about three days). This fact is indicative of a decrease of the degreeof anomality of the magnetic stars continuum spectrum with increasingrotational velocity. Yet another proof has been obtained suggesting thatslow rotation is one of the crucial factors contributing to thedevelopment of the phenomenon of magnetic chemically peculiar stars.Magnetic CP stars with weak depressions at 5200 Å are intermediateobjects between stars with strong depressions and normal A- and B-typestars both in terms of field strength and rotational velocity.

Discovery of 17 new sharp-lined Ap stars with magnetically resolved lines
Chemically peculiar A stars (Ap) are extreme examples of the interactionof atomic element diffusion processes with magnetic fields in stellaratmospheres. The rapidly oscillating Ap stars provide a means forstudying these processes in three dimensions and are at the same timeimportant for studying the pulsation excitation mechanism in A stars. Aspart of the first comprehensive, uniform, high-resolution spectroscopicsurvey of Ap stars, which we are conducting in the Southern hemispherewith the Michigan Spectral Catalogues as the basis of target selection,we report here the discovery of 17 new magnetic Ap stars havingspectroscopically resolved Zeeman components from which we derivemagnetic field moduli in the range 3-30kG. Among these are (1) thecurrent second strongest known magnetic A star, (2) a double-lined Apbinary with a magnetic component and (3) an A star with particularlypeculiar and variable abundances. Polarimetry of these stars is neededto constrain their field geometries and to determine their rotationperiods. Magnetic fields of chemically peculiar stars. I. The catalog of magnetic CP stars
This is the first paper of the series dedicated to the analysis of themagnetism of chemically peculiar (CP) stars of the upper Main Sequence.We use our own measurements and published data to compile a catalog ofmagnetic CP stars containing a total of 326 objects with confidentlydetected magnetic fields and 29 stars which are very likely to possessmagnetic field. We obtained the data on the magnetism of theoverwhelming majority of the stars solely based on the analysis oflongitudinal field component B e . The surface magneticfield, B s , has been measured for 49 objects. Our analysisshows that the number of magnetic CP stars decreases with increasingfield strength in accordance with exponential law, and stars with B e exceeding 5kG occur rarely (about 3% objects of ourlist).

Magnetic-field dependence of chemical anomalies in CP stars
The dependence of the degree of anomaly of parameter Z of Genevaphotometry ( Z0 = Z CP ℒ Z norm.) on theaverage surface magnetic field Bs is analyzed. The Z0 value isproportional to the degree of anomaly of chemical composition. It wasfound that Bs → 0 corresponds Z0 → ‑0.010÷‑0.015, i.e., part of CP stars are virtually devoid of magneticfield, but exhibit chemical anomalies. This effect may be due toselection whereby only objects with strong chemical anomalies areclassified as CP stars, thereby producing a deficit of stars withrelatively weak anomalies. Moreover, CP stars have other sources ofstabilization of their atmospheres besides the magnetic field, e.g.,slow rotation. Formulas relating Z0 to Bs are derived.

The diagnosis of the mean quadratic magnetic field of Ap stars
Aims.We assess the validity of the method of determination of the meanquadratic field modulus and we explore its limits. Methods.Weanalyse high spectral resolution, high signal-to-noise spectra of a fewAp stars, and of a superficially normal main-sequence A star, recordedover a broad wavelength range with EMMI at the NTT.Results.Weintroduce a revised form of the regression equation describing thedependence of the second-order moment of the line profiles about theircentre, in natural light, on various parameters of the correspondingtransitions. We show that interpretation of the observed dependencesallows one to determine the mean quadratic magnetic field modulus of thestudied stars, and their v sin i. We explain why the contributions tothe quadratic field of the mean square magnetic field modulus and of themean square longitudinal field cannot in general be disentangled. Forthose stars of the sample that have resolved magnetically split lines,we show that the derived values of the quadratic field are mostlyconsistent with the values of the mean longitudinal magnetic field andof the mean magnetic field modulus at the observed phase. However thereare some hints that they may occasionally slightly underestimate theactual field. This suggests that the method is unlikely to yieldspurious field detections. In addition, we illustrate the importance forthis type of analyses of using, as far as possible, samples of lines ofa single ion, and to specify in the presentation of the results whichion was used.Conclusions.The results presented in this paper lendstrong support to the validity of the quadratic field diagnostic methodto obtain a realistic quantitative characterisation of the magneticfields Ap and related stars.

Magnetic field model for slowly rotating CP-stars. γEqu= HD201601
A magnetic field model is constructed for the extremely slow rotatorγEqu based on measurements of its magnetic field over many yearsand using the “magnetic charge” method. An analysis ofγEqu and of all the data accumulated up to the present on themagnetic field parameters of chemically peculiar stars leads to someinteresting conclusions, of which the main ones are: the fact that theaxis of rotation and the dipole axis are not parallel in γEqu andthe other slowly rotating magnetic stars which we have studiedpreviously is one of the signs that the braking of CP stars does notinvolve the participation of the magnetic field as they evolve “tothe main sequence.” The axes of the magnetic field dipole in slowrotators are oriented arbitrarily with respect to their axes ofrotation. The substantial photometric activity of these CP stars alsoargues against these axes being close. The well-known absence ofsufficiently strong magnetic fields in the Ae/Be Herbig stars alsopresents difficulties for the hypothesis of “magneticbraking” in the “pre-main sequence” stages ofevolution. The inverse relation between the average surface magneticfield Bs and the rotation period P is yet another fact in conflict withthe idea that the magnetic field is involved in the braking of CP stars.We believe that angular momentum loss involving the magnetic field canhardly have taken place during evolution immediately prior “to themain sequence,” rather the slow rotation of CP stars most likelyoriginates from protostellar clouds with low angular momentum. Some ofthe slowly rotating stars have a central dipole magnetic fieldconfiguration, while others have a displaced dipole configuration, wherethe displacement can be toward the positive or the negative magneticpole.

On the detection of chemically peculiar stars using Δa photometry
We have summarized all Δ a measurements for galactic field stars(1474 objects) from the literature published over more than two decades.These measurements were, for the first time, compiled and homogeneouslyanalyzed. The Δ a intermediate band photometric system samples thedepth of the 5200 Å flux depression by comparing the flux at thecenter with the adjacent regions with bandwidths of 110 Å to 230Å. Because it was slightly modified over the last three decades,we checked for systematic trends for the different measurements butfound no correlations whatsoever. The Δ a photometric system ismost suitable to detecting magnetic chemically peculiar (CP) stars withhigh efficiency, but is also capable of detecting a small percentage ofnon-magnetic CP objects. Furthermore, the groups of (metal-weak)λ Bootis, as well as classical Be/shell stars, can besuccessfully investigated. In addition, we also analyzed the behaviourof supergiants (luminosity class I and II). On the basis of apparentnormal type objects, the correlation of the 3σ significance limitand the percentage of positive detection for all groups was derived. Wecompared the capability of the Δ a photometric system with theΔ (V1 - G) and Z indices of the Geneva 7-color system to detectpeculiar objects. Both photometric systems show the same efficiency forthe detection of CP and λ Bootis stars, while the indices in theGeneva system are even more efficient at detecting Be/shell objects. Onthe basis of this statistical analysis it is possible to derive theincidence of CP stars in galactic open cluster and extragalactic systemsincluding the former unknown bias of undetected objects. This isespecially important in order to make a sound statistical analysis ofthe correlation between the occurrence of these objects andastrophysical parameters such as the age, metallicity, and strength ofglobal, as well as local, magnetic fields.

Multiplicity among chemically peculiar stars. II. Cool magnetic Ap stars
We present new orbits for sixteen Ap spectroscopic binaries, four ofwhich might in fact be Am stars, and give their orbital elements. Fourof them are SB2 systems: HD 5550, HD 22128, HD 56495 and HD 98088. Thetwelve other stars are: HD 9996, HD 12288, HD 40711, HD 54908, HD 65339,HD 73709, HD 105680, HD 138426, HD 184471, HD 188854, HD 200405 and HD216533. Rough estimates of the individual masses of the components of HD65339 (53 Cam) are given, combining our radial velocities with theresults of speckle interferometry and with Hipparcos parallaxes.Considering the mass functions of 74 spectroscopic binaries from thiswork and from the literature, we conclude that the distribution of themass ratio is the same for cool Ap stars and for normal G dwarfs.Therefore, the only differences between binaries with normal stars andthose hosting an Ap star lie in the period distribution: except for thecase of HD 200405, all orbital periods are longer than (or equal to) 3days. A consequence of this peculiar distribution is a deficit of nulleccentricities. There is no indication that the secondary has a specialnature, like e.g. a white dwarf. An analysis of the Ap binary HD 81009
We present a detailed investigation of the orbit, componentcharacteristics and magnetic field of the single spectrum (SB1), visualAp binary HD 81009. By simultaneously modeling new and archival radialvelocity measurements and new and archival speckle interferometricmeasurements (obtained with the CHARA array) we obtain a unique model ofthe orbital geometry and constraints on the component masses of HD81009. Additional constraints provided by the Hipparcos parallax andcomponent magnitude difference and the optical spectral energydistribution allow us to determine a self-consistent solution for thebasic physical properties of the components. HD 81009 is a highlyeccentric (e=0.718), long-period (P_orb=29.3 y) binary composed of twomain sequence A-type stars. While its presence is required in order toexplain the astrometric and photometric observations, the coolersecondary component is never detected spectroscopically, and istherefore inferred to rotate somewhat more rapidly than the hottercomponent. The hotter primary component is identified as theslowly-rotating (P_rot=33fd 984) magnetic Ap star. We have modeled themagnetic field geometry of this star using new and archival longitudinalmagnetic field and mean magnetic field modulus observations. Therotational variations of the magnetic quantities are consistent with adecentered dipole surface magnetic field geometry with small magneticobliquity (beta < 20degr ). This is consistent with the observationof Landstreet & Mathys (2000), who report that nearly all magneticAp stars with periods longer than around 25 days exhibit beta <20degr, implying that their magnetic fields are approximately aligned withtheir rotational axes. Do the physical properties of Ap binaries depend on their orbital elements?
We reveal sufficient evidence that the physical characteristics of Apstars are related to binarity. The Ap star peculiarity [represented bythe Δ(V1-G) value and magnetic field strength] diminishes witheccentricity, and it may also increase with orbital period(Porb). This pattern, however, does not hold for largeorbital periods. A striking gap that occurs in the orbital perioddistribution of Ap binaries at 160-600d might well mark a discontinuityin the above-mentioned behaviour. There is also an interestingindication that the Ap star eccentricities are relatively lower thanthose of corresponding B9-A2 normal binaries for Porb>10d.All this gives serious support to the pioneering idea of Abt &Snowden concerning a possible interplay between the magnetism of Apstars and their binarity. Nevertheless, we argue instead in favour ofanother mechanism, namely that it is binarity that affects magnetism andnot the opposite, and suggest the presence of a newmagnetohydrodynamical mechanism induced by the stellar companion andstretching to surprisingly large Porb.

The AP spectroscopic binary HD 59435 revisited
HD 59435 is a double-lined spectroscopic binary, one component of whichis a magnetic Ap star and the other a G8 or K0 giant (Wade et al. 1996).Both components are very slowly rotating, and the Ap star exhibitsspectral lines resolved into their magneti cally-split components.Herein we report additional measurements of the mean magnetic fieldmodulus of the Ap star, measurements of the radial velocities of bothcomponents, and Geneva photometry of the system, and discuss theirimpact upon conclusions drawn previously. Based on observationscollected at the European Southern Observatory (La Silla, Chile; ESOProgramme Nos. 56.E-0688, 58.E-0159, 60.E-0565). Radial velocities. Measurements of 2800 B2-F5 stars for HIPPARCOS
Radial velocities have been determined for a sample of 2930 B2-F5 stars,95% observed by the Hipparcos satellite in the north hemisphere and 80%without reliable radial velocity up to now. Observations were obtainedat the Observatoire de Haute Provence with a dispersion of 80Ä,mm(-1) with the aim of studying stellar and galactic dynamics.Radial velocities have been measured by correlation with templates ofthe same spectral class. The mean obtained precision is 3.0 km s(-1)with three observations. A new MK spectral classification is estimatedfor all stars. The HR-diagram from HIPPARCOS data. Absolute magnitudes and kinematics of BP - AP stars
The HR-diagram of about 1000 Bp - Ap stars in the solar neighbourhoodhas been constructed using astrometric data from Hipparcos satellite aswell as photometric and radial velocity data. The LM method\cite{luri95,luri96} allows the use of proper motion and radial velocitydata in addition to the trigonometric parallaxes to obtain luminositycalibrations and improved distances estimates. Six types of Bp - Apstars have been examined: He-rich, He-weak, HgMn, Si, Si+ and SrCrEu.Most Bp - Ap stars lie on the main sequence occupying the whole width ofit (about 2 mag), just like normal stars in the same range of spectraltypes. Their kinematic behaviour is typical of thin disk stars youngerthan about 1 Gyr. A few stars found to be high above the galactic planeor to have a high velocity are briefly discussed. Based on data from theESA Hipparcos astrometry satellite and photometric data collected in theGeneva system at ESO, La Silla (Chile) and at Jungfraujoch andGornergrat Observatories (Switzerland). The observed periods of AP and BP stars
A catalogue of all the periods up to now proposed for the variations ofCP2, CP3, and CP4 stars is presented. The main identifiers (HD and HR),the proper name, the variable-star name, and the spectral type andpeculiarity are given for each star as far as the coordinates at 2000.0and the visual magnitude. The nature of the observed variations (light,spectrum, magnetic field, etc.) is presented in a codified way. Thecatalogue is arranged in three tables: the bulk of the data, i.e. thosereferring to CP2, CP3, and CP4 stars, are given in Table 1, while thedata concerning He-strong stars are given in Table 2 and those foreclipsing or ellipsoidal variables are collected in Table 3. Notes arealso provided at the end of each table, mainly about duplicities. Thecatalogue contains data on 364 CP stars and is updated to 1996, October31. This research has made use of the SIMBAD database, operated at CDS,Strasbourg, France.

Evolutionary estimates for 10 magnetic AP stars calculated from their rigid rotator geometries.
I present estimates of the evolutionary states (effective temperatures,masses, radii, luminosities and ages) of 10 magnetic Ap stars, andsubsequent constraints on the evolution of magnetic fields in theseobjects. Using rotational axis inclinations (sin i) reported by Leroy etal. (1996A&A...311..513L), combined with apparent rotationalvelocities (vsin i) and rotational periods (P_rot_) obtained from avariety of sources, the radii of these stars have been calculatedassuming rigid rotation. From the positions of these objects in theradius-effective temperature (log(R/Rsun_)-log(T_eff_)) planeI obtain their evolutionary states using the model evolutionarycalculations by Schaller et al. (1992A&AS...96..269S). The stars inthis study span the entire width of the main sequence, showing notendancy to cluster near the ZAMS or the TAMS. In this respect theseresults are consistent with the conclusion of North(1993IAUCo.138..577N) (who reports that the Ap (CP2) stars appear to bedistributed uniformly along the width of the main sequence) andinconsistent with that of Hubrig & Mathys (1994AN....315..343H) (whosuggest that the magnetic Ap stars may be near the end of their mainsequence life). When the magnetic field strengths of these stars aregraphed versus the fraction of main sequence evolution completed, nocorrelation is evident. However, it is of interest to note that strongmagnetic fields do exist in Ap stars at all evolutionary states (fromthe ZAMS to the TAMS), and that more than 70% of the stars discussed inthis paper have polar magnetic field strengths between 3 and 6kG. Asimilar graph of the magnetic axis obliquity angle β of each starversus age shows that intermediate values of β exist for stars asold as 10^9^yr. This indicates that, if β does evolve towardasymptotic values as suggested by Mestel et al. (1981MNRAS.195..979M),the timescale for this evolution is quite long, at least for stars with~5kG surface magnetic fields and rotational periods near 10 days.

The mean magnetic field modulus of AP stars
We present new measurements of the mean magnetic field modulus of asample of Ap stars with spectral lines resolved into magnetically splitcomponents. We report the discovery of 16 new stars having thisproperty. This brings the total number of such stars known to 42. Wehave performed more than 750 measurements of the mean field modulus of40 of these 42 stars, between May 1988 and August 1995. The best of themhave an estimated accuracy of 25 - 30 G. The availability of such alarge number of measurements allows us to discuss for the first time thedistribution of the field modulus intensities. A most intriguing resultis the apparent existence of a sharp cutoff at the low end of thisdistribution, since no star with a field modulus (averaged over therotation period) smaller than 2.8 kG has been found in this study. Formore than one third of the studied stars, enough field determinationswell distributed throughout the stellar rotation cycle have beenachieved to allow us to characterize at least to some extent thevariations of the field modulus. These variations are oftensignificantly anharmonic, and it is not unusual for their extrema not tocoincide in phase with the extrema of the longitudinal field (for thefew stars for which enough data exist about the latter). This, togetherwith considerations on the distribution of the relative amplitude ofvariation of the studied stars, supports the recently emerging evidencefor markedly non-dipolar geometry and fine structure of the magneticfields of most Ap stars. New or improved determinations of the rotationperiods of 9 Ap stars have been achieved from the analysis of thevariations of their mean magnetic field modulus. Tentative values of theperiod have been derived for 5 additional stars, and lower limits havebeen established for 10 stars. The shortest definite rotation period ofan Ap star with magnetically resolved lines is 3.4 deg, while thosestars that rotate slowest appear to have periods in excess of 70 or 75years. As a result of this study, the number of known Ap stars withrotation periods longer than 30 days is almost doubled. We brieflyrediscuss the slow-rotation tail of the period distribution of Ap stars.This study also yielded the discovery of radial velocity variations in 8stars. There seems to be a deficiency of binaries with short orbitalperiods among Ap stars with magnetically resolved lines. An analysis of the AP spectroscopic binary HD 59435.
HD 59435 is a double-lined spectroscopic binary (SB2), with slowlyrotating components of very similar luminosity. It was studied throughhigh-resolution spectroscopy, photometry and CORAVEL observations.Orbital elements are presented. The orbital period is 1387 days. Theline of sight lies close to the orbital plane, but no eclipses have beenobserved so far. The primary is an evolved G8 or K0 star, which haslikely just descended the Red Giant Branch. The secondary is a cool Apstar close to the end of its main-sequence life. It shows lines resolvedinto magnetically split components, from which its mean magnetic fieldmodulus can be diagnosed. The field varies with a remarkably largerelative amplitude, over a rotation period which is at least of theorder of 3 years.

The evolutionary state of magnetic AP stars
The characteristics of two stars, 25 Sex and HD 21699, as additionalcandidates for the sample of magnetic stars belonging to superclusters,are discussed. For 25 Sex, which was already accepted as a probablemember of the Hyades supercluster in a previous study, argumentssupporting the view that this star indeed is a magnetic star arepresented. In the case of HD 21699, the radial velocity derived from ourobservations is not inconsistent with membership. But from thedeterminations of its proper motion found in the literature, this starcannot be regarded as a probable member of the alpha Per cluster. On thebasis of recent evolutionary models, all the well established Ap clustermembers appear to be close to the end of their main-sequence life. Thissuggests that A stars possibly become magnetic at the end of corehydrogen burning.

Stroemgren photometry of F- and G-type stars brighter than V = 9.6. I. UVBY photometry
Within the framework of a large photometric observing program, designedto investigate the Galaxy's structure and evolution, Hβ photometryis being made for about 9000 stars. As a by-product, supplementary uvbyphotometry has been made. The results are presented in a cataloguecontaining 6924 uvby observations of 6190 stars, all south ofδ=+38deg. The overall internal rms errors of one observation(transformed to the standard system) of a program star in the interval6.5

Catalogue of CP stars with references to short time scale variability
A catalogue was compiled which contains all references in the literaturesince 1962 related to variations of CP stars on time scales shorter thanthe rotation period. The role of this catalogue lies in the unbiasedlisting of all available references, and not in a critical evaluation.

A seven-year northern sky survey of AP stars for rapid variability
A high-speed photometric survey of 120 Ap stars in the northern sky, hasbeen conducted, between 1985 and 1991, in order to search for rapidvariability. Stars of spectral types, namely from B8 to F4, have beenselected for the survey. The selected pulsational variable stars occupythe hotter regions of the instability strip of the Hertzsprung-Russeldiagram. Noted is the absence of pulsations in the hotter B8-A3 Apstars; this does not, however, preclude the existence of pulsations,since HD 218495 was recently discovered to be a rapidly oscillating Ap(roAp) star. The primary result of this study is that variouscombinations of photometric indices, while pointing towards roAp starshaving the characteristic signatures of cool, SrCrEu stars, still failto isolate the roAp phenomenon from similar nonpulsating Ap stars.Color-magnitude and color-color diagrams are presented in order tocomplete this survey.

Photometric variability of some CP stars
The photometric data relative to twenty-three southern CP stars havebeen re-analyzed. New or improved parameters of the lightcurves arepresented for eleven of them.

Photoelectric photometry of peculiar and related stars. II Delta-a-photometry of 339 southern Ap-stars
Delta-a system photometry of the sample of Ap stars from Bidelman andMcConnell's (1973) catalogue is discussed. Comparing delta-ameasurements in four marginally different systems, slight modificationsof the delta-a photometric system are found to be uncritical except forthe wavelength of the depression filter g2. The reddening-free index isvery efficient for silicon and chromium stars, and the spectroscopicdetection probability for these stars decreases with decreasingtemperature. Comparison of delta-a results with the Geneva index delta(V1-G) confirms that the latter's efficiency in recognizing peculiaritydrops strongly from hot to cool Ap stars. A decrease of delta-a towardsthe hot Ap stars is found using the a vs. (u-b) diagram, implying thatb-v is an unsuitable temperature indicator for such stars. The lowaverage intrinsic variability of the delta-a in the sample, whencompared with the small variation of integrated surface magnetic fieldsin case of dipole configuration, implies that the wavelength 5200feature correlates with the surface magnetic field strength.

Estimation of spectral classifications for bright southern stars with interesting Stromgren indices
This paper investigates the degree of success with which uvby photometrycan be applied to predict spectral classifications for 947 A, F, and Gstars brighter than an apparent magnitude of 8.3 and with four-colorindices indicating some kind of interesting, unusual, or peculiarspectrum. One or several possible spectral classifications are estimatedfor each star from photometry alone, double stars are distinguished, andthe estimates are compared with published classifications. The resultsshow that the framework provided by uvby photometry can be extended toinclude most G and K stars, reddened stars, peculiar stars, and certaintypes of double star.
