HD 8801: A Unique Single Am Star with γ Doradus and δ Scuti Pulsations
We have discovered the first example of a star pulsating intrinsicallywith both γ Doradus and δ Scuti frequencies. The star, HD8801, is an Am metallic-line star that appears to be single. Since thevast majority of Am stars are members of binary systems with periodsless than 1000 days and also do not pulsate, HD 8801 possesses a veryunusual, if not unique, combination of physical properties. Ourphotometry, acquired with an automatic telescope at FairbornObservatory, resolves six independent pulsation periods between 0.048and 0.404 days. The two longest periods lie within the range of γDor variables, while the four shorter periods are within the range ofδ Sct stars. Eleven radial velocities, obtained over an 11 monthperiod, have a mean of 0.8+/-0.3 km s-1, providing noevidence for a spectroscopic companion. The star is on the main sequenceand lies within both the γ Dor and δ Sct instability strips.Pulsation constants computed for the six periods agree with pulsationconstants computed for other γ Dor and δ Sct variables. HD8801 is also the first confirmed case of a metallic-line star pulsatingwith γ Dor frequencies. Its projected rotational velocity of 55 kms-1 is typical for Am stars, which, as a group, rotate moreslowly than normal A stars. HD 8801's slow rotation compared to normal Astars does not appear to arise from either a binary companion orevolutionary expansion and thus remains a puzzle. The coexistence ofmetallicism and pulsation in several main-sequence stars near the rededge of the δ Sct strip contradicts recent models that predictpulsations only in more evolved stars.

Rotational velocities of A-type stars in the northern hemisphere. II. Measurement of v sin i
This work is the second part of the set of measurements of v sin i forA-type stars, begun by Royer et al. (\cite{Ror_02a}). Spectra of 249 B8to F2-type stars brighter than V=7 have been collected at Observatoirede Haute-Provence (OHP). Fourier transforms of several line profiles inthe range 4200-4600 Å are used to derive v sin i from thefrequency of the first zero. Statistical analysis of the sampleindicates that measurement error mainly depends on v sin i and thisrelative error of the rotational velocity is found to be about 5% onaverage. The systematic shift with respect to standard values fromSlettebak et al. (\cite{Slk_75}), previously found in the first paper,is here confirmed. Comparisons with data from the literature agree withour findings: v sin i values from Slettebak et al. are underestimatedand the relation between both scales follows a linear law ensuremath vsin inew = 1.03 v sin iold+7.7. Finally, thesedata are combined with those from the previous paper (Royer et al.\cite{Ror_02a}), together with the catalogue of Abt & Morrell(\cite{AbtMol95}). Late A-type stars: new Strömgren photometric calibrations of absolute magnitudes from HIPPARCOS
Hipparcos trigonometric parallaxes have been used to derive aphotometric absolute magnitude calibration of main-sequence late A-typestars in terms of Strömgren photometric indices - accounting fortemperature, evolution and metallicity effects - and projectedequatorial rotational velocities. The derived calibrations are valid formain-sequence normal A3-A9 and metallic Am stars, showing residuals of0.22 and 0.20 magnitudes, respectively. One of the fitting methods used(BCES) allows the derivation of the observational ZAMS in this spectralrange, showing an excellent accordance with theoretical evolutionarymodels. The Age Range of Hyades Stars
On the basis of canonical models, the age of Hyades supercluster stars,whether in the Hyades and Praesepe clusters or the noncluster field,ranges from (5-6) x 10^8 to 10^9 yr. The difference between the parallaxderived from the supercluster motion and that obtained from Hipparcosobservations has a dispersion only twice that of the mean dispersion ofthe individual Hipparcos values. The supercluster appears not to containred giants on the first ascent of the red giant branch, but onlyasymptotic giant branch (``clump'') stars. The masses obtained forindividual components of binary stars in the supercluster show adispersion of less than 10% when compared with model predictions.

On the HIPPARCOS photometry of chemically peculiar B, A, and F stars
The Hipparcos photometry of the Chemically Peculiar main sequence B, A,and F stars is examined for variability. Some non-magnetic CP stars,Mercury-Manganese and metallic-line stars, which according to canonicalwisdom should not be variable, may be variable and are identified forfurther study. Behaviour of calcium abundance in Am-Fm stars with evolution
Calcium abundance in the atmosphere of Am stars is examined as afunction of their evolutionary state within the main sequence. Newspectroscopic abundances as well as abundances obtained photometricallyby Guthrie (1987) are used, since they are mutually quite consistent.The main result of this work is that, contrary to earlier suggestions,calcium abundance does not tend to be larger in evolved Am stars than inunevolved ones, for objects distributed along a given evolutionary trackin the HR diagram. The trend appears to be the reverse, if it is presentat all. For our whole sample of Am stars, there is a significantcorrelation between calcium abundance and effective temperature, in thesense that the cooler objects are the most Ca-deficient, hence have themost pronounced Am peculiarity. This implies an apparent correlationbetween calcium deficiency and age, although the lack of Am starsyounger than log t = 8.6 seems real. Our results are fully consistentwith the low rate of Am stars observed in young clusters and withtheoretical predictions of time-dependent radiative diffusion (Alecian1996). We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star,when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

Vacuum ultraviolet imagery of the Virgo cluster region
The results are reported of an experiment using the UV imager aboard anattitude-controlled S520 type sounding rocket. The total UV fluxes ofgalaxies in the Virgo Cluster as well as the flux level of the diffuseUV background around the cluster were measured. The data on NGC 4486 andNGC 4472 confirm the variation in the degree of the 'turnup' below 200nm in the energy spectrum of the total light of elliptical galaxies. Attwo-color diagram of galaxies of visual/near-UV/vacuum UV indicates thatcolors of spiral galaxies are distributed within a strip andwell-correlated with the morphological type, while elliptical galaxiesare located differently from spiral galaxies.

ICCD speckle observations of binary stars. IV - Measurements during 1986-1988 from the Kitt Peak 4 M telescope
One thousand five hundred and fifty measurements of 1006 binary starsystems observed mostly during 1986 through mid-1988 by means of speckleinterferometry with the KPNO 4-m telescope are presented. Twenty-onesystems are directly resolved for the first time, including newcomponents to the cool supergiant Alpha Her A and the Pleiades shellstar Pleione. A continuing survey of The Bright Star Catalogue yieldedeight new binaries from 293 bright stars observed. Corrections tospeckle measures from the GSU/CHARA ICCD speckle camera previouslypublished are presented and discussed.

A photometric study of wide visual double stars with significant relative proper motion
Photometric observations and uvby H-beta indices of 142 wide visualdouble stars are presented. Calibrations of the indices are used toderive MK class, color excess, absolute magnitude, effectivetemperature, and distance. The results are used to check candidatesdouble stars for the Hipparcos mission for opticity.

Starbursts, binary stars, and blue stragglers in local superclusters and groups. I - The very young disk and young disk populations
The distributions in the HR diagram with theoretical time-constant locifor stars in several young clusters and superclusters are compared todemonstrate that 'blue stragglers' in these aggregates are mostfrequently simply single massive (mode B) stars formed in bursts of starformation that occur at discrete intervals in time following theformation of the bulk of the low-mass (mode A) stars in the aggregate.The characteristics of the close binary systems in these aggregates areexamined to show that, in several cases, mass transfer by Roche lobeoverflow has or will occur and that, in some instances, the system wouldhave appeared as a blue straggler prior to the mass-transfer event, and,in other instances, mass transfer will lead to the identification of thesystem as a blue straggler. Thus, it is concluded that the bluestraggler phenomenon has at least two distinct physical origins: it mayoriginate from delayed formation (starbursts) or from 'delayedevolution' in some close binaries (mass transfer from an evolvedprimary).

Abundances of calcium for a sample of 57 classical AM stars
Abundances of calcium, log N(Ca), are derived for a fairly completesample of 57 single-lined classical Am stars. Published photoelectricmeasures of the CaII K-line at 3933 A and K-line spectral types are usedto determine the equivalent widths of the K-line for a differentialcurve-of-growth comparison of the Am stars with the standard stars 15Vul and 28 And. On a scale with log N(H) = 12.0, the values of log N(Ca)for the Am stars range from 5.5 to 6.5, the solar value being 6.36. TheAm stars with low abundances of calcium have a small range of themodified age parameter, and absolute magnitudes within about 1.3 mag ofthe zero-age main sequence, whereas the other Am stars and normal starshave a larger spread in age. These results are probably consistent withthe suggestion that the Am phenomenon is due to subphotosphericseparation of elements by diffusion in slowly rotating A-type stars.

A systematic search for members of the Hyades Supercluster. IV - The metallic-line stars and ultrashort-period Cepheids
Bright Star Catalog stars with beta values in the 2.70-2.88 rangecontain 127 members of the Hyades Supercluster, which have been chosenon the basis of the direction of their proper motion. Available radialvelocities confirm supercluster membership for most of these stars.Exceptional regularity is noted in the values of the pulsation constantQ computed for the ultrashort period Cepheids on the basis of knownperiods, model masses and model radii. Outside the center of the Hyadescluster, the largest concentration of supercluster stars is in a regionof 30 pc radius, between 60 and 80 pc above the sun, where 30 percent ofthe expected stars in the temperature range presently discussed aresupercluster members.

Metallicism and pulsation - The marginal metallic line stars
Evidence is presented that HR 4594 and HR 8210 are pulsating marginal Amstars. It is suggested that (1) classical Am stars do not pulsate, (2)evolved Am stars may pulsate, and (3) marginal Am stars may pulsate. Itis further suggested that, within the Am domain, temperature, age,rotation, and pulsation are sufficient to determine whether a star willbe Am, marginal Am, or spectrally normal.

Absolute luminosity calibration of F stars
Luminosity calibrations are performed for a restricted sample of 706F-type field stars of all luminosity classes and a similarly restrictedsample of 251 main-sequence F stars. The samples are restricted withrespect to values of photometric and metallicity indices, propermotions, radial velocities, and apparent magnitudes. Both linear andsecond-order relations between absolute magnitude and the photometricindices beta, /c1/ or (b-y), /c1/ are considered.These relations are calibrated by the statistical parallax method basedon the principle of maximum likelihood. The possible effect ofinterstellar absorption on the calibration results is investigated alongwith an effect of a photometric correction to the absolute magnitudes.The results obtained are compared with those of Crawford (1975) as wellas with the trigonometric parallaxes. The coefficients of thecalibration relations are derived from the trigonometric parallaxes, andpoor agreement is indicated. It is concluded that the trigonometricparallaxes must be used very carefully and only for nearby stars.
