The Geneva-Copenhagen survey of the Solar neighbourhood. Ages, metallicities, and kinematic properties of 14 000 F and G dwarfs We present and discuss new determinations of metallicity, rotation, age,kinematics, and Galactic orbits for a complete, magnitude-limited, andkinematically unbiased sample of 16 682 nearby F and G dwarf stars. Our63 000 new, accurate radial-velocity observations for nearly 13 500stars allow identification of most of the binary stars in the sampleand, together with published uvbyβ photometry, Hipparcosparallaxes, Tycho-2 proper motions, and a few earlier radial velocities,complete the kinematic information for 14 139 stars. These high-qualityvelocity data are supplemented by effective temperatures andmetallicities newly derived from recent and/or revised calibrations. Theremaining stars either lack Hipparcos data or have fast rotation. Amajor effort has been devoted to the determination of new isochrone agesfor all stars for which this is possible. Particular attention has beengiven to a realistic treatment of statistical biases and errorestimates, as standard techniques tend to underestimate these effectsand introduce spurious features in the age distributions. Our ages agreewell with those by Edvardsson et al. (\cite{edv93}), despite severalastrophysical and computational improvements since then. We demonstrate,however, how strong observational and theoretical biases cause thedistribution of the observed ages to be very different from that of thetrue age distribution of the sample. Among the many basic relations ofthe Galactic disk that can be reinvestigated from the data presentedhere, we revisit the metallicity distribution of the G dwarfs and theage-metallicity, age-velocity, and metallicity-velocity relations of theSolar neighbourhood. Our first results confirm the lack of metal-poor Gdwarfs relative to closed-box model predictions (the ``G dwarfproblem''), the existence of radial metallicity gradients in the disk,the small change in mean metallicity of the thin disk since itsformation and the substantial scatter in metallicity at all ages, andthe continuing kinematic heating of the thin disk with an efficiencyconsistent with that expected for a combination of spiral arms and giantmolecular clouds. Distinct features in the distribution of the Vcomponent of the space motion are extended in age and metallicity,corresponding to the effects of stochastic spiral waves rather thanclassical moving groups, and may complicate the identification ofthick-disk stars from kinematic criteria. | The domain of γ Doradus variables in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram 70 new γ Doradus candidates were identified from Hipparcosphotometry, which represents more than a doubling of the presently knownnumber. Selecting the objects with good evidence for multiperiodicity,it is found that these stars, together with bona fide members of theclass, occupy a well-defined region in a colour-magnitude diagram. Thisdomain corresponds to a range of 7200-7700K on the zero-age mainsequence (ZAMS) and 6900-7500K one magnitude above it, which partlyoverlaps with the instability strip of δ Scuti stars. For thefirst time, γ Doradus stars can be discussed as a group. They canbe found over a significant fraction of the main sequence lifetimes forobjects in the relevant temperature range. An upper limit on the surfacemetallicity of γ Doradus stars is apparent, which may guide thesearch for their pulsation driving mechanism. The importance of possibleobjects exhibiting both γ Doradus and δ Scuti-typepulsations is discussed.
| The Tokyo PMC catalog 90-93: Catalog of positions of 6649 stars observed in 1990 through 1993 with Tokyo photoelectric meridian circle The sixth annual catalog of the Tokyo Photoelectric Meridian Circle(PMC) is presented for 6649 stars which were observed at least two timesin January 1990 through March 1993. The mean positions of the starsobserved are given in the catalog at the corresponding mean epochs ofobservations of individual stars. The coordinates of the catalog arebased on the FK5 system, and referred to the equinox and equator ofJ2000.0. The mean local deviations of the observed positions from theFK5 catalog positions are constructed for the basic FK5 stars to comparewith those of the Tokyo PMC Catalog 89 and preliminary Hipparcos resultsof H30.
| FAUST Observations of Ultraviolet Sources toward the Virgo Cluster We analyze three UV images covering a ~100 square degree field towardthe Virgo cluster, obtained by the FAUST space experiment. We detect 191sources to a signal-to-noise ratio of 4.4 and identify 94% of them. Mostsources have optical counterparts in existing catalogs, and about halfare identified as galaxies. Some sources with no listed counterpart wereobserved at the Wise Observatory. We present the results oflow-resolution visible spectrophotometry and discuss the foreground 101stellar sources and the 76 detected galaxies, both in the cluster and inthe foreground or background. We derive conclusions on star formationproperties of galaxies and on the total UV flux from discrete anddiffuse sources in the cluster. We test for the presence of intraclusterdust, determine the clustering properties of UV emitting galaxies, andderive the UV luminosity function of Virgo galaxies.
| Diffuse Stellar Light at 100 Kiloparsec Scales in M87 In a new survey of nearby galaxies from stacked photographic images,seemingly regular galaxies of several types show amorphous, oftenasymmetrical features at very faint levels (28 mag arcsec-2). In M87, adiffuse fan of stellar material extends along the projected southeast(major) axis out to about 100 kpc. We suggest that accretion of a smallspheroidal galaxy into a larger potential is the most likely explanationfor the diffuse structure. The orbit is required to pass close to thecenter of the potential in order to produce a fan that is nearly alignedwith the major axis and has a large opening angle, as seen in M87. Oursimulations include a rigid primary potential with characteristicssimilar to those derived for M87 and a populated secondary potential. Weinvestigate the structure of the dark matter at large galactic radii byrepresenting M87 with different potentials. The morphologies of thedebris of intruder spheres and disks of different masses and orbitalparameters limit the possible accretion scenarios. The total luminosityof the fan and the kinematics of debris in the center of the primarypotential are analyzed and compared with substructure in M87. The shortlifetimes (tfan <~ 5 x 108 yr) of the simulated diffuse fans and lackof observed shells indicates either that we are seeing M87 at a "specialtime" during its evolution or that infall from small intruder galaxiesis common. Our simulations indicate that several accretion events couldbe hidden in galaxies. For many orbits, intruder material is quicklyspread out to very low light levels. Observations of the high specificfrequency of globular clusters in M87 provide evidence that the galaxymay experience frequent accretions of this type.
| A catalog of far-ultraviolet point sources detected with the fast FAUST Telescope on ATLAS-1 We list the photometric measurements of point sources made by the FarUltraviolet Space Telescope (FAUST) when it flew on the ATLAS-1 spaceshuttle mission. The list contains 4698 Galactic and extragalacticobjects detected in 22 wide-field images of the sky. At the locationssurveyed, this catalog reaches a limiting magnitude approximately afactor of 10 fainter than the previous UV all-sky survey, TDl. Thecatalog limit is approximately 1 x 10-14 ergs A sq cm/s,although it is not complete to this level. We list for each object theposition, FUV flux, the error in flux, and where possible anidentification from catalogs of nearby stars and galaxies. Thesecatalogs include the Michigan HD (MHD) and HD, SAO, the HIPPARCOS InputCatalog, the Position and Proper Motion Catalog, the TD1 Catalog, theMcCook and Sion Catalog of white dwarfs, and the RC3 Catalog ofGalaxies. We identify 2239 FAUST sources with objects in the stellarcatalogs and 172 with galaxies in the RC3 catalog. We estimate thenumber of sources with incorrect identifications to be less than 2%.
| Stroemgren photometry of F- and G-type stars brighter than V = 9.6. I. UVBY photometry Within the framework of a large photometric observing program, designedto investigate the Galaxy's structure and evolution, Hβ photometryis being made for about 9000 stars. As a by-product, supplementary uvbyphotometry has been made. The results are presented in a cataloguecontaining 6924 uvby observations of 6190 stars, all south ofδ=+38deg. The overall internal rms errors of one observation(transformed to the standard system) of a program star in the interval6.5
| Vacuum ultraviolet imagery of the Virgo cluster region The results are reported of an experiment using the UV imager aboard anattitude-controlled S520 type sounding rocket. The total UV fluxes ofgalaxies in the Virgo Cluster as well as the flux level of the diffuseUV background around the cluster were measured. The data on NGC 4486 andNGC 4472 confirm the variation in the degree of the 'turnup' below 200nm in the energy spectrum of the total light of elliptical galaxies. Attwo-color diagram of galaxies of visual/near-UV/vacuum UV indicates thatcolors of spiral galaxies are distributed within a strip andwell-correlated with the morphological type, while elliptical galaxiesare located differently from spiral galaxies.
