Spectroscopic analysis of southern B and Be stars
Spectroscopic monitoring of 141 southern field B-type stars, 114 of themknown to exhibit the Be phenomenon, allowed the estimation of theirprojected rotational velocities, effective temperatures and superficialgravities from both line and equivalent width fitting procedures.Stellar ages, masses and bolometric luminosities were derived frominternal structure models. Without taking into account the effects ofgravity darkening, we note the occurrence of the Be phenomenon in laterstages of main-sequence phase.

SB9: The ninth catalogue of spectroscopic binary orbits
The Ninth Catalogue of Spectroscopic Binary Orbits(http://sb9.astro.ulb.ac.be) continues the series of compilations ofspectroscopic orbits carried out over the past 35 years by Batten andcollaborators. As of 2004 May 1st, the new Catalogue holds orbits for2386 systems. Some essential differences between this catalogue and itspredecessors are outlined and three straightforward applications arepresented: (1) completeness assessment: period distribution of SB1s andSB2s; (2) shortest periods across the H-R diagram; (3)period-eccentricity relation.

A homogeneous catalog of new UBV and H-beta photometry of B- and A-type stars in and around the Scorpius-Centaurus OB association
B- and A-type stars in and near the Sco-Cen OB association areinvestigated with UBV and H-beta photometry to acquire data relevant tothe luminosity function of Sco-Cen. The measurements generally consistof two 10-s integrations of U, B, V, (W, N) filters, and theobservations are corrected iteratively for atmospheric extinction andinstrumental response. The data presented give the mean V magnitude, mean B-V, mean U-B, and the estimated uncertainties for these values. The catalog provides a homogeneous catalog of data for a large fieldwith stellar objects delineating membership to the association Sco-Cenand that affect the luminosity function of the aggregate.

An Einstein Observatory SAO-based catalog of B-type stars
About 4000 X-ray images obtained with the Einstein Observatory are usedto measure the 0.16-4.0 keV emission from 1545 B-type SAO stars fallingin the about 10 percent of the sky surveyed with the IPC. Seventy-fourdetected X-ray sources with B-type stars are identified, and it isestimated that no more than 15 can be misidentified. Upper limits to theX-ray emission of the remaining stars are presented. In addition tosummarizing the X-ray measurements and giving other relevant opticaldata, the present extensive catalog discusses the reduction process andanalyzes selection effects associated with both SAO catalog completenessand IPC target selection procedures. It is concluded that X-rayemission, at the level of Lx not less than 10 exp 30 ergs/s, is quitecommon in B stars of early spectral types (B0-B3), regardless ofluminosity class, but that emission, at the same level, becomes lesscommon, or nonexistent, in later B-type stars.

Fifth fundamental catalogue. Part 2: The FK5 extension - new fundamental stars
The mean positions and proper motions for 3117 new fundamental starsessentially in the magnitude range about 4.5 to 9.5 are given in thisFK5 extension. Mean apparent visual magnitude is 7.2 and is on average2.5 magnitudes fainter then the basic FK5 which has a mean magnitude of4.7. (The basic FK5 gives the mean positions and proper motions for theclassical 1535 fundamental stars). The following are discussed: theobservational material, reduction of observations, star selection, andthe system for the FK5 extension. An explanation and description of thecatalog are given. The catalog of 3117 fundamental stars for the equinoxand epoch J2000.0 and B1950.0 is presented. The parallaxes and radialvelocities for 22 extension stars with large forecasting effects aregiven. Catalogs used in the compilation of the FK5 fundamental catalogare listed.

HD 43246 and HD 127208 - Two unusual F-G + B binary systems
New optical spectroscopic observations along with ultraviolet IUEobservations have been obtained for the two interacting F or G III + B Vbinaries: HD 43246 and HD 127208. Photometric observations indicaterandom changes superimposed on regular ellipsoidal light variations, thelatter probably the result of tidal distortion of the giant primaries.Mass transfer and loss is apparent in inverted mass ratios derived fromorbital analysis, strong wind features present in the spectra, and thepresence of circumsystem shells. Regular and irregular changes in thespectral features are discussed in this context.

HD 207739 and other F + Be variables
Characteristics for a group of composite spectrum stars which havestrong H alpha emission and peculiar satellite UV spectra are compared.Spectroscopic periods and photometric variability are discussed.Compared with normal noninteracting composite spectrum binaries, theyexhibit excess flux in the middle UV region. This is believed toindicate the presence of an accretion disk.

The long-period K + Be binary HR 2577 (MWC 827)
New spectroscopic observations near H-alpha and Na I D, along withultraviolet IUE scans, have been obtained for the K + Be compositesystem HR 2577. High-precision radial-velocity measures do not supportthe suggested 58-year orbit of Hendry (1982). The H-alpha emission fromthe Be component undergoes considerable variations typical of its class. The presence of a Li I 6707 A feature as well as the IUE observationssupport the idea that little or no interaction between the binarycomponents of HR 2577 is taking place.

UBVRI photometry of FK4 and FK4 supplement stars
Photometric UBVRI observations of 172 Southern Hemisphere stars of theFK4 and FK4-Supplement catalogs, obtained using a dry-ice-cooledphotomultiplier on the 50-cm telescope at ESO on 37 nights during1982-1983 are reported. The data are presented in tables and graphs andbriefly characterized.

Bright southern stars of astrophysical interest
The paper lists a number of bright peculiar stars in the SouthernHemisphere discovered on 20-A/mm spectrograms. Recent information isalso given for a few known peculiar objects. The lists include: oneLambda Boo star, 4 Hg and other Bp stars, 7 Am stars, 17 shell oremission-line stars, and 37 double-lined spectroscopic binaries, amongwhich are two triple-lined, four composite, eight variable or eclipsing, and three peculiar shell and/or emission-line systems.
